Renew Energy and Exelon Wind See Value in STOP-FYRE Fire Extinguishers

Wind Energy Companies See STOP-FYRE as Industry Standard in Wind Turbine Fire Safety
Fires in wind turbines and generators are more common than most people realize. They require specific types of portable and effective fire suppression technologies. Fires in wind turbines can start from turbine operation or lightning strikes. Those risks increase from highly flammable oil in turbine nacelles igniting, catastrophic turbine failure resulting in turbine fires, and burning debris spreading in windy conditions. To make matters worse, recent reports surfaced from the Journal of Fire Safety Science estimating the average cost of a fire that damages or destroys a wind turbine can be as much as $2 million.
If the fire is still at a manageable size, STOP-FYRE is just what the wind energy safety professionals ordered. In fact, some consider it their new standard in fire safety. If one extinguisher can help eliminate the possible cost of a windmill replacement, it makes sense to use it.
Late in 2014, Renew Energy Maintenance of Sioux Falls, SD became the first in their field to recognize the value of AKE’s fire extinguishers. Though costing more than your average – a standard unit retails for about $550 – the benefits of the unit and the possibility of saving the replacement or repair cost of $2 Million per turbine is an easy calculation. For starters, the units are compact and lightweight, meaning the fire safety crews can take them with in tight spaces and up to the turbines if need be. The crews of Renew also run into many cases where a fire is obstructed or hard to reach. With STOP-FYRE, they appreciate that they can spray in the vicinity of the fire and the gas will expand and find the fire. That means less risk on the part of the crews, and more an increased likelihood of successfully extinguishing a fire.
Earlier in 2015, Exelon Energy was the second to see value in STOP-FYRE as a new standard in wind mill fire suppression. Keeping costs of damaging the wind mill in mind, STOP-FYRE was seen to have a significant advantage over traditional fire extinguishers – it is non-corrosive, non-toxic, and leaves no mess behind. That is because STOP-FYRE makes use of a proprietary, clean agent fire suppression gas. Exelon understood this as significant because with traditional extinguishers used in wind mills, they can leave a corrosive chemical compound behind. This substance can have potential health risks for the crews and can cause damage to most surfaces exposed to it. That is a risk that the safety professionals of Exelon are not willing to take.
Both companies found value, also, in not having to hire a company to service the units monthly or yearly, like they would if they had gone with dry chemical units. They will avoid costly servicing and recertification fees, thanks to the innovative, yet simple to use design of STOP-FYRE. Not to mention each unit comes with a lifetime guarantee, allowing both organizations to rest easy should any of their units ever have a problem.
Renew and Exelon are just the first to purchase STOP-FYRE within the Wind Energy Industry, but it appears that their leads, as they are industry leaders, are being followed. Several other companies in the industry have already begun conversations with AKE Safety Equipment on adding STOP-FYRE to their safety equipment resources.
As word of STOP-FYRE’s usefulness and effectiveness spreads within the Wind Energy industry, AKE currently has plans to launch a redesigned product in August of this year. Improvements will include a fire extinguisher cap, a larger more durable can, and a pressure gauge on the bottom. This new unit will replace the current and premium models currently offered – increasing the value of each model sold.
AKE Safety Equipment is honored to have these well known, respected, and professional wind energy service organizations as part of its customer family and wish them well.
