Kidde Recalls 5 Million Fire Extinguishers
Press Release – For Immediate Release
Faulty Components Force Kidde to Recall 31 Models of Fire Extinguishers
Rochester, MN (AKE Safety Equipment), February 13, 2015 – Reports of dozens of their fire extinguishers failing to operate has forced Kidde (http://www.kidde.com/) to recall nearly 5 million disposable fire extinguishers because they may not discharge properly, leading to injury.
Kidde states these extinguishers have faulty valve components that prevent the fire extinguishers from discharging when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency. The issue arose from a supplier in Mexico manufacturing the units out of specification.
It is recommended that that consumers stop using the Kidde fire extinguishers immediately.
According to the recall alert “4.6 million fire extinguishers are in the U.S. and 175,000 are in Canada. There are 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers with Zytel black plastic valves included in the recall. The recalled fire extinguishers are red, white, or silver and are either ABC or BC rated. The ratings are located to the right of the nameplate. The fire extinguishers were sold from August 2013 through November 2014. They were sold online and at Home Depot, Menards, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores across the country. The fire extinguishers are priced up to $200. Model numbers involved in the recall include 10BC, 1A 10BC, 1A 10BCW, 2A10BC, 5BC, 5BCW, FA10G, FA110, FA5B, FC10, FC110, FC5, FH/ RESSP, FX10, FX10BC, FX10K, FX210, FX210R, FX210W, FX340GW, FX340SC, FX5II, KFH Twin, M110 Twin, M5 Twin, Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5, Mariner 5 G, RESSP and XL 5MR. “These are not new concerns for dry chemical fire extinguishers,” comments Allen Kronebusch, CEO and founder AKE Safety Equipment (http://www.ake.com) – makers of STOP-FYRE® – The World’s BEST Fire Extinguisher™. Safety professionals at organizations like The National Tractor Pullers Association (https://www.ntpapull.com/) and The Lucas Oil Monster Truck Nationals (http://www.monsternationals.com/) have made STOP-FYRE their “Official Fire Extinguisher”.
“Over the years, people from all walks of life in many different lines of work tell stories of dry chemical fire extinguishers failing on them. Fire extinguishers they traditionally buy and use do not function then leave them without a fire safety tool in their time of need. This results in lost time, money, equipment, property, and possibly life. These same people become fed up and do research for a better, more reliable fire extinguisher. STOP-FYRE® was developed to work when they need it to, to be a reliable, multi-shot unit and leave no corrosive mess behind. It is made in the USA which allows for superior monitoring during production and for quality before shipping – reducing the chance of a 5 million unit recall. Customers consistently rate the fact that AKE Safety Equipment’s fire extinguishers are backed by a Lifetime No-Hassle Guarantee™ as the number one reason they buy. That means they never have to worry about being left with a potentially deadly red decoration that might not work,” added Kronebusch.
Fire safety and the fire safety equipment industry is heavily regulated and monitored. Consumers should take this story as a word of caution before placing all of their trust in only products that have followed the steps of gaining industry and product certification, undergoing independent laboratory testing such as the Underwriters Laboratory, and enacting strict guidelines in manufacturing. While many steps are taken to ensure the best products are made using these regulations, this story reveals that such regulations are no guarantee to those entrusting their lives or livelihoods to traditional fire extinguishers.
AKE Safety Equipment’s main concern is to make sure consumers are aware of this recall and to make sure they are protected. Contact AKE Safety Equipment online via AKE.com or via phone at 888-673-4734 for more information on your specific fire safety needs.
