Sturgis Motorcycle Rally-Are you Going?
Every first week in August, since 1938, the small South Dakota town of Sturgis becomes motorcycle central for hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. The 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be held August 5th through 11th this year, but the vendor and concerts start on August 1st. The rally week has many events including concerts, bike races, bike shows and there is a variety of vendors for every need for the motorcycle and the motorcycle rider from clothing to equipment. AKE Safety Equipment is looking forward to being a vendor at this year’s rally from August 1st through August 10th.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has many events including cross country rides and concerts with national rock and country acts. The daily rides start August 3rd and run through August 10th starting each day from various locations in Sturgis. Each of the rides travels past national landmarks and parks throughout South Dakota. This includes trips to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Bear Butte State Park, Badlands, Black Hills National Forest and Devil’s Tower National Monument. There are charity rides throughout the week that help raise funds for local and national organizations. On August 4th at 9am the South Dakota Association Annual Presidents Ride for Kids Literacy is helping the Reading Across America campaign. The 11th Annual Sturgis Mayor’s Ride on August 5th benefits the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and Police Reserves. The Custer Crusin’ Mayor’s Ride on August 6th collects donations to the Custer Veterans Memorial Fund. A few of the designated rides are in memorial of law enforcement, military members and local bikers.
The normal population of Sturgis throughout the year is around 6,400, but during the motorcycle rally week the population from visitors can go up to 600,000 people! Last year, there were 445,000 bikers in attendance during the week of the rally. The entire community of Sturgis (and more) comes out to help host the motorcycle enthusiasts who come from all over the world for the rally.
The days during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are full of trips, concerts, shopping and gathering with old friends.
